Introduction
Starting as a sophomore on a team that travels across the country, play a national schedule, many kids can get swallowed up by the spotlights. Not Jalen Johnson, he went through the year and time and time again stepped up to the task. Throughout the year he averaged 7 points, displayed his athleticism from the wing and made jump shots to range.
Johnson was the fifth starter on the 3A NCISAA State Championship winning Wesleyan Christian team. He has stepped up to be ranked 22 in North Carolina’s 2016 Phenom 75.
Positives
Johnson as a lot of upside to work with, he has great natural length and explosion to his game. He thrives when he is able to stretch his legs in transition. He attacks the basket with purpose and has great explosion to finish high above the rim. In the half court set he has good wing handle and ability to make shots at the rim or spot up from behind the three point line.
Defensively he has all the tools to be a high level wing defender in time.
Areas of Improvement
While he excels going toward to the basket, Johnson needs to add strength to his lanky frame. While he makes a lot of shots, Johnson will need to add more consistency to his jump shot. As he continues to play at a high level competition, his game IQ will continue to rise.
Moving Forward
As Johnson continues to play his skills will continue to develop and evolve, which is a scary thought. At this point he is budding with potential and trying to find comfort his role. He will continue to display great explosion toward the basket and should take a step forward as a shot maker.
It will be fun to watch Johnson’s development as he should step out of the fifth starter role and into the team’s forefront sooner rather than later.
